Make room for more

It's that time of year again...

The wine club shipments are coming. Another great email offer has you hooked. Summer storage is trying schedule delivery. You're going wine tasting on Labor Day Weekend.

The cellar is full, and yet more delicious wine is coming your way.

Quick, what do you do?

Whatever it is, do not panic.

Here are 5 simple ways to make room this week so you don't have to cancel your wine clubs or ignore those shipping notifications.

  1. Pull out a few bottles that you can give away as gifts. Not over the holidays - this month. "This made me think of you" goes a long way in September.

  2. Pull out a few bottles that may be over-the-hill and plan a tasting with friends. Invite them to bring a few, too.

  3. Mark 1 nice bottle of wine to open this weekend. It's not too late for an al fresco Labor Day dinner with perfect weather.

  4. Mark 3 favorites that will pair nicely with your upcoming club shipments. A well-earned vertical is only exciting when the bottles are opened.

  5. Get your Thanksgiving Day list ready. Did you open 2 bottles last year? This year make it 3.

It's hard to get excited about a full cellar when you have more wine coming. So whether you're fully stocked, or simply running low on space, this is the time to make plans.

Making room in your cellar is real responsibility that most people don't appreciate, but it's also a gift to yourself and your wine circle. And in a way, this is the reason we collect.

If you have any questions about what to open, how or when, let me know what's on your mind. I'd love to help.

On Monday I opened a 17 year bottle of Rioja. Night 1 was sublime. Alas, it wasn't so great on night 2. I used my favorite preservation method, the Private Preserve inert gas, but admittedly I waited until the next morning to use it.

Mental note: When enjoying an older bottle of wine, it's not likely going to be as good after night 1. If you're going to only have a glass or two, just use the Coravin already!
